Chile Hut Based Level 1

Chile Hut-Based Level I

This course covers all the information in a standard AIARE Level 1 Course, but uses a real backcountry ski hut in Chile for a classroom! Class sizes are smaller and more intimate in hut-based courses and you have the added advantage of being able to apply your new knowledge immediately as well as being able to completely immerse yourself in the course curriculum.

For backcountry travelers, terrain assessment and decision making skills are a must. This Hut Based avalanche course provides knowledge that is essential to backcountry travel and safety, including a thorough look into the snowpack and evaluating stability. Our professional instructors instill the knowledge to help assess and manage risk.

Students will come away from the course having learned:

  • How to prepare and plan for a backcountry tour
  • How to analyze an avalanche forecast
  • How to identify avalanche terrain & avalanche types
  • How to recognize hazardous conditions
  • Basic snow pack understanding
  • Basics of route selection/terrain features
  • Basic tests techniques and interpretation
  • Educated decision making
  • Basic rescue techniques

About the Hut

We will use the hut (refugio) facilities of Los Paraguas

Nico Palma Meyer, the owner of Rutas Australes runs the hut and the Paraguas hut and ski lift facilities.  Nico’s family take care of cooking and preparing Breakfasts, lunch sacks, and dinners.

How to get to Los Paraguas?

Denver/Houston/San Francisco/Los Angeles/New York/Miami/Dallas/ to Santiago-Chile

From Santiago-Chile folks can fly (Sky Airlines or Lan Airlines), take a bus, or rent a car to Temuco. I recommend arranging for Nico to take care of transportation from Temuco to Los Paraguas. It should be easy to coordinate to have the US folks transported to Malalcahuello so that they can ski Corralco Ski Resort  and access their VERY extensive backcountry skiing terrain.
